David Baird Smith, “The Founder,” pp. 5–6 in R. W. Chambers, King Lear: The First W.P. Ker Memorial Lecture (1940): took degree in Classics from Glasgow Universitiy in 1875; qualified as solicitor in 1882; “He was an exact and careful scholar and was interested in textual questions. He never wrote anything and was inarticulate.” A friend of W. P. Ker; endowed the W. P. Ker Lectureship and also the Douglas Chair of Civil Law at Glasgow University
