Biographical sources
Biddle, a wealthy lawyer, inventor of eccentric musical instruments and author of several books of verses, spent his last twenty years with 8000 books in scholarly retirement on Biddle’s Island near Logansport. A. W. Shumaker, in his History of Indiana Literature (1962), describes Biddle, not altogether happily, as “an outstanding apostle of culture, a sort of Hoosier Matthew Arnold.” See also R. E.
