Biographical sources

Daughter of Edward Fenwick Boyd (1810–1889), of Moor House, a mineral agent and manager of colliery (Hugh Fenwick Boyd, “Memoir of Edward Fenwick Boyd,” The Mining Engineer: Transactions of the Federated Institution of Mining Engineers 2 (1890-91) 204-208), who supported the education of women. Find a Grave: “Julia Boyd took on the role of caring for her father when her mother passed away. Bereft at the loss of her father, a course of foreign travel was prescribed as the best sedative for nerves somewhat unstrung after her father’s death. She set sail for Melbourne, Australia in 1890. An avid collector of books, silver and art, Julia’s travels allowed her to expand her collection (now stored at the Discovery Museum) which includes New Zealand birds, a cannibal fork and a basket for brains from Fiji and quartz from the Pink and White Terraces.”
