“Fairport” is the fictional setting of Walter Scott, _The Antiquary _(1816), and “Aldobrand Oldbuck” is an ancestor of that novel’s protagonist, Jonathan Oldbuck

Biographical sources

Listed as resident in Lucknow in the UK Civil Engineer lists (1884, 1886) and employed by the Oudh and Rohilkund Railway. In his revision of Irving Brock’s translation of François Bernier’s Travels in the Mogul Empire (1891), he is described as a member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal; in the preface he thanked his “kinsman,” the publisher Archibald David Constable (q. v.). In the latter’s edition of John Major’s History of Greater Britain (1892), the editor thanked his “cousin,” Archibald Constable, of the Oudh and Rohilkund Railway. In the Athenaeum (March 30, 1895), Archibald David Constable wrote that “Mr. Archibald Constable (late of Lucknow, India) has had no connection with, or interest in, our firm since August, 1893.”
