A “dottle” is “a remnant of tobacco left in a pipe after smoking,” and John Fraser was the secretary of Cope’s Tobacco Company in Liverpool. (The “J. Fraser” at NQ 6.7.335 and 7.5.252 is the Rev. John Fraser of Lavant, Chichester.)
